Cooling the FX-6300

Hello all, I already have a mobo with AM3+ socket on it, so I would really like to use the AMD FX-6300 for gaming. The gaming I would be doing would be like battlefield on high settings or Fallout 4 on ultra high for several hours at a time. I would like to use a liquid cooler on it to reduce noise because I absolutely hate fan noise. What closed loop liquid cooler should I get? I've been considering the H100i GTX 240mm but is that overkill? I already have the Corsair H55 but reviews on it are not good. Any recommendations? My case is the NZXT H440 BTW.

Then nothing is over kill the h100i is very decent if you wanted better youd have to go custom which is alot more expensive. Make sure to overclock your cpu as much as you can so it holds up decently in current gen games as it needs every boost it can get to keep up in games.

I've heard great things about the H100i GTX 240mm. In fact, I recently installed one in a friend of mines system. Though it works great, the fans are fairly loud and there is no included software to control their speed.

I'm currently using the NZXT Kraken X61, and I couldn't be happier. My CPU (FX 6350) idles at 10c, and never surpasses 35c under heavy load. The real benefit lies in the free software that supports it, CAM. Not only can you control your fan speed, you can create custom fan curves, change the color of the LED on the Kraken, as well as monitor your system's temperature (GPU, CPU, RAM, HDD, etc.).

Currently the 280mm version is much more expensive than the H100i, but it drops regularly. I bought mine for $100 less than six months ago. If you are willing to hold out for another drop, or settle for the 140mm now, you won't regret it.

What AMD FX series processor would you use in this build then? I'm flexible on my options honestly. I just chose the 6300 because the higher up models have heat issues.

Thanks for the reply! Do you game much at all on that processor? This is a gaming computer and have heard many negative reviews on the FX series. And the CAM software has given me absolute hell. My HUE+ is almost never recognized in it, and I fear the Kraken would do the same.

Everyone likes to hate on FX, and accuse it of terrible performance compared to Intel. Sure, per core performance and power usage on Intel CPU's are much better, but most games don't require a CPU any better than the 8350. I personally haven't had any trouble with my 6350.

I can't guarantee that your experience with the Kraken will be anything like mine, but I had no issues whatsoever. It immediately recognized my water cooler and easily allowed me to control it's fans. I wouldn't recommend it if I had a bad experience, I honestly think this is one of the best AIO coolers on the market. The friend of mine I mentioned before who got the H100i GTX says his CPU idles at 30c, while mine hardly reaches that temperature under load.

what cpu and mobo does your friend have?

He's using the FX-8320 CPU with the MSI 970 Gaming MB.
