I'm looking for opinions on under-clocking my GPU. ,my GPU outperforms my CPU by far. Here's the deal, i have been clocking this card for a while with msi afterburner. when i overclock the core clock a bit i LOSE fps in game. But when i Underclock the vram speed, core clock, and voltage (to be 'on par' with my cpu) i gain 5-15 fps in game and the games run a lot more stable.

My rig: .. dont bash me too hard..

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 +5600 2.81 ghz
GPU: Geforce GTX 260 896mb
RAM: 4gb 667mhz ddr2 ram
PSU: 500w

This system my seem weak but it preforms well beyond expectations:
-i get 50+ fps in L4D2 on ultra
-30-60fps in Skyrim on med/high settings
-60+ fps in Fallout 3 on ultra
-30-40 fps in gta iv on med setting.... And so on

My Gpu's Stock settings:
Clock: 576mhz
Mem: 999mhz
Core Voltage: 1113 mv

Setting after my underclocking:
Clock: 450
Mem: 750
Voltage: 1030

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE BEST UNDERCLOCK, WHAT SHOULD I CHANGE, AND WHY DO YOU THINK WHEN I UNDERCLOCK MY GPU I GAIN FPS IN GAME??

-Thanks for your time!

Solution
maybe your card cant handle much voltage.. thats why it crash a lot so when u underclock.. its her sweet spot to operate as long as u want
what exactly UR psu brand and model?

sorry, im bad with computer terminology. what do you mean by panel?

{extra bit of info: once i underclocked some of my games that would crash often COMPLETELY stopped crashing mid game and i can play for hours on end now with no problems}

i have a 1920x1080 and a 1024x768 utility monitor, works fine on both now (had problems on both before)

psu:rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2DB 500W ATX12V Power Supply

Never thought of that.. the card is quite old so it might not be able to handle the voltage it used to..

oh no, im perfectly satisfied where i am now. just think its interesting how an underclock improved performance. if anything ill get a quad core and another gtx 260 to run sli. the gtx 260 has about 75% of the performance of a gtx 600 series card (acording to gpuboss.com). not bad at all for a card so old.

thats all mate, thanks for the input!
