Hi folks, I have a quick question for 'yall :)

So I bought 2x4GB of CMP8GX3M2A1600C9 a couple years back.
I now want to upgrade to 16GB, what is the best way to go about it?
I was looking at CMX8GX3M2A1600C9, would it be compatible?

Thanks in advance :)

Solution
make sure they have good return options wherever you purchase them and you keep your receipts. there are many, many reports here and everywhere of problems caused by mixing packages of RAM. they are tried and tested together at the factory and those that prove compatible are packaged together for a reason.

there's a chance you'll be lucky and not have any noticeable problems. i would go for it and if it causes a problem then return them and upgrade.

most likely RAM from separate packages will not be entirely compatible. so, 2 different models will be even less compatible. it is always recommended to stick with tested packaged sets.
but really there isn't much home computing that will even make use of greater than 8GB of RAM. if you're having a problem more RAM most likely won't help it.

those #s you've listed aren't a good indicator of what the RAM is. manufacturer and model name is a better way to get feedback pertaining to those particular sticks.

I don't know much about the inner workings of a computer, though I run multiple programs at once, when I check my RAM usage it's almost always maxed out.

So what you're saying is that I should buy a completely new kit instead of adding more RAM?

Below I'll post CPUZ's txt export on my memory specs if that might help.

look at your ram or purchase history and find the exact model and buy another 2X4GB if you have another 2 slots empty if not then you got no choice but to sell your current ram and put 2x8GB in

a lot of programs and games will fill up most of your RAM space while open but having that much more of it isn't going to make much of a speed difference.

if you really want to upgrade; i would get a new set of dual-channel 2x 8GB DDR3 2133 or 2400 though because the price difference between an 8GB and a 16GB set really isn't that much. and price from 1600 to 2400 isn't really that much anymore either.

I don't have a ton of money to spend, so I'd rather add more RAM than replace it entirely.
