PC Consistently Freezes 30 Minutes After Log-In, Once per Session

Hey all,

I recently built myself a new setup with the following specs:

Processor: Intel Core i7 5820K

OS Version: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (version 1511, build 10586.63)

Motherboard: MSI X99A SLI PLUS(MS-7885)

BIOS Version: 1.90 (10/30/2015)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury (2 x 8GB) SDRAM DDR4 2133

SSD: SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D

HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"

Since completion, I've been running into an issue, nearly daily wherein after my first boot, roughly 30 minutes after logging in for the first time after that initial boot (not 30 minutes after turning the machine on, but 30 minutes after logging in), my PC will freeze, dropping all audio, and denying manual mouse and keyboard input (but not dropping into a blue-screen event). I then, have to manually reset the machine, and for the rest of the session (tested up to 16 hours of run-time), I won't run into this issue anymore. Once I've shut the machine down, and left it off for a period of time, however, there's a good chance it will happen again.

Note: There doesn't seem to be any coloration between my PC activity and these freezes. I've had it freeze on me while doing nothing, while installing software, while browsing the web, while typing in a text editor, with a full-screen application open, etc.

I was wondering if anyone has dealt with something similar to this, or has any suggestions to assist me in trouble-shooting this issue.

Also, I have experienced something very similar to this, in order to fix it I updated my Bios. Try this, make sure you know what you're doing though, as it can be dangerous(but don't worry too much, just don't pull the power when it's updating)

Have you made any Bios changes?

Confirm that all your drivers are up to date, This mean Motherboard, Graphics card, and then any other things such as mouse, monitor you name it.

MemTest ran through three passes without returning any errors, and I'm fairly confident it's not an issue with the memory. Swapped modules at one point and still ran into the issue.

My Bios is fully up to date, and I haven't made any notable changes to it.

Found a GPU driver update, as well as a couple system device updates, including a chipset controller update, if I recall correctly. Fingers crossed that this resolves the issue, but I'll definitely update within the week if it resurfaces!

Ran fine the day after. I let the machine sit without logging in for a few hours before using it.
Yesterday however, I ran into the issue again, only several minutes after turning on the machine and logging into my user profile.

Interesting, try running on-board graphics for a day or so, if problem persists that rules out your GPU(though I doubt this is the issue).

One possible culprit could be your Boot Drive. I would recommend you try removing the SSD and then trying a fresh install of windows on your HDD. Please note that before you do this back up everything on your Hard Drive. Maybe to your SSD or something. Installing windows won't necessarily delete the files you have on it. But later once you plug your SSD back in you may be forced to format your Hard drive.(but then again you may just be fine setting the SSD as the default boot device. But windows can be Wanky sometimes)

Also if you don't have windows 10 to install, install any other software, download linux if you have to. Just to test if the computer doesn't freeze when using the HDD rather than the SSD.

Also did you make sure everything is plugged in correctly on your board? Primarily the 12v cable (the CPU power cable, look it up if you don't know). Also the GPU power, sometimes people only plug in one 6pin/8pin, which can cause freezing for sure.

Edit:
What PSU are you running? you've got some pretty hefty stuff in your computer, maybe your PSU isn't powerful enough.

For PSU, I'm running an EVGA Supernova 750B2. Pretty sure it should be enough for the build. Double-checked the CPU and GPU power, and they look to be in order.

I'll play around with swapping the boot drive, hopefully this week, and a few other tests on the SSD if possible. If it's a hardware issue, that would be my guess as well, at this point.

As a note, I did get it to freeze once on the Windows sign-in screen this week, so that rules out a few software options.
