Hello guys yesterday i finished my build and tested the system. I got a single msi gtx 970 powered by a xfx pro series 650w and i have not overclocked it is still factory overclocked. I tested the gpu with unigine valley for over 1 hour and is was stable with no artifacts and a max temp : 67celsius (used msi after burner and unigine valley temps)fps was also stable between 40 and to over 100fps depending on the scene Today i was starting up dota and i could see artifacts and the pc restarted and the bios alerted me something about the psu. I could boot the pc so i tested it with unigine valley and it showed artifacts already when i started the program the temp was 36 celsius when i started unigine valley so i think it is the psu fault. I know that artifacts its normal when you stress test but have i damaged something? My psu is working and the fan is working and got enough watt to run the system. Maybe i need to manually adjust the core voltage? All the fans is working(psu, fans, cpu and gpu). The case os placed on the ground with the fan down. I tried to put the case on a table so there was free air both from upside and down to the psu still the same.I need you help because it is my first pc build ever and i don't know exactly what the problem is. Thanks in advance i appreciate it

Why did you test the GPU when your mobo says that there are power surges, which must be coming from the PSU?

The error massage i think was: Power Supply Surges detected during the previous power on.
ASUS Anti-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply unit! "
cpu: i5-6600 with stock cooler. Motherboard: asus h170-pro. Ram: kingston hyperfury x 2x4gb. Case: fractal design r5(psu fan facing down, the case is on the carpet floor, Ssd: samsung evo 840 250g. Harddrive: wd blue 1gb

I have tried it and the same thing. I am not sure about the bios error but there was something about the power supply. I tried it in unigine valley and i was getting like 22 fps and the temp was about 62-66 which i think is staple. The fans was running. I think it is the psu but i am not sure. Is it the psu or graphoc card because of the artifacts? Have i damaged my graphc card or is it showing the artifacts because it is not getting enough watts to power it? When i opened unigine valley and run it the screen was showing artifacts immerdiately the same with dota 2 when i started it from steam and opened the artifacts was showing immerdiately. So i am unsure about if it is the gpu or psu but in the error it was something about the power supply. The artifacts is not there when i boot up or use the pc to surf on the internet and in windows. Is it not possible to show prevoius bios errors in the bios so i can see the exact error?

If the motherboard says you have an unstable PSU, then RMA it immediately, and +1 to ASUS for detecting it and preventing further damage to the rest of your PC.

However, I disagree with JQB - surge protectors are a complete and utter waste of money, and a UPS does not help at all except in a power cut. PSU have surge protectors built in to them.

okay i will rma it. Do you think any of the other components have taken damage? I know it is normal for gpu to show artifacts when it need power or overclocked tol much and is unstable

I had a similar issue once, and everything was fine once I replaced the PSU

Okay thanks for your answer i will rma the psu and hoepfully everything will work

Lodders a surge protector may not be the best choice in the world but a UPS is certainly worth the over voltage, over current, under voltage protection and of course power out. In any of those situations the UPS switches to battery power until safe power levels are restored. If you have an SSD and you don't protect it from sudden power failure you risk significantly reducing the life of the SSD for each power outage.

If you live in Africa or Central America, and get regular power outages and voltage variation, then yes, definitely get a UPS
If you live in a modern country with a proper power supply like Great Britain, then no, you don't need a UPS.

I live in Ohio - we get 2 or 3 power outages a year. Ice Storms, Severe Thunder Storms, Wind Storms, the occasional Derecho and less frequently tornadoes. And if weather doesn't cause an outage you get some idiot that takes out a power pole with their car. Finally squirrels and other small animals that get to friendly with transformers can cause outages.

I have tested the gpu at the vendor i boughy it at and after 3 hours of testing no artifacts. I think it is the psu but i am sure what do you think? I am asking agsin because if there ks nothing wrong with my psu when it get tested by the vendor i will have to pay them for working for nothing.
