After I installed the e6700 , the cpu fan would start but pc will not boot. I tried clearing the c mos and taking the mobo battery out to no avail. Both Cpus are from the same chipset. Not sure if its a power issue. my PSU is 285w max, I'm also running a Geforce GT 430 GPU. It still won't boot when I unplugged the GPU. Please help! Thanks!!

The latest BIOS version for your motherboard is CF94510J[1].15A.0038.

What this means is that you already have the latest BIOS version.

Upgrading the CPU on an OEM system is tricky because some manufacturers don't allow any changes.

Was the chip pulled from a working system?

You need to find the motherboard support link.
There you should find a list of supported processors, and downloads for drivers and bios updates.
You can run cpu-z to identify your motherboard and the bios level it is currently at.

A caveat: DO NOT update your bios on speculation.
A failed update can permanently brick your motherboard.

If your system was built before the release of the E6700, chances are that the motherboard did not yet have support for it. The latest BIOS version for your motherboard is 0278. You can check your current BIOS version in either system specifications or a third-party app like Speccy or CPU-Z. Instructions to update the BIOS can be found on the motherboards manual.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/42490/Intel-Desktop-Board-D945GCLF
Click on the drop-down menu of "Any Download Type" and click BIOS. The latest BIOS is the first result in the list.

You can find instructions on how to update your BIOS on page 41 of the motherboard's manual (https://downloadmirror.intel.com/15990/eng/D945GCLF_ProductGuide04_English.pdf).

I downloaded the that bios and the Intel Express bios update utility. It started to run , then this error pops up "This program is unable to continue. The Bios you are trying to update is invalid for your system " . ???

Is your computer a prebuilt system or a custom built system?

What model is it, do you know?

Look for a sticker on your system that will tell you the model.

If you can't find the model but can find a serial number, enter it here under "drivers and downloads" and that will tell you the model number.

I couldn't locate your computer with the serial provided.

Use this tool to auto-detect the serial and model number of your computer.

Note: The link is a direct download for the software.

I see...

Sorry I think I misunderstood your question before. My Gateway PC's model # is 'GM5446E'
What I gave you was my motherboard #.

Yes , supposedly should be working. But I got it used off ebay so you never know. Is it suppose to react like this if the cpu is dead? By the cpu fan spinning but not booting up? I stupidly tried to put a e8600 in too( I know wrong chip set) and it reacted the same way but with the fan spinning a lot faster and can't be turned off my holding the power button (had to unplug psu) where as I can shut it down like this with the 6700. Luckily both times I'm able to put my original 6320 back in and it's working again.

It can be possible that your system does not allow any upgrades to the CPU.

It is also possible that the chip is dead. So if it is still within the return period, I would return it and purchase a different one.
