Computer stutters in audio, mouse, keyboard buffer

Hi guys,

I don't really know where to ask this question. I have computer that I built myself about 2 years ago. Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard, i7-3770K CPU, 32GB ram, 840 EVO bootup drive, running Windows 8.1, 64bit. It has worked extremely well ever since I first hit the power button with one exception as I describe below:

Sometime last summer (around June 2015) I started noticing that audio would stutter when I was talking to a client on Skype. Wrote it off as a problem with the Skype connection, but couple of weeks later noticed it also when listening to music or watching videos. Then noticed that the stuttering also affected the mouse, i.e. every time the audio stuttered, the mouse pointer starting jumping. It also affects the keyboard buffer, i.e. when typing I see the characters stop showing up as I type and then they catch up after half a second or so.

The computer never locks up and this only occurs when any one program hits about 15-20% CPU. Memory usage does not seem to affect it. Disk usage does not seem to affect it either, although it's difficult to say as most programs go up in CPU with increased disk activity. I have noticed that some programs seem to affect this more than others, Google Chrome, VMWare Workstation and Avast virus protection (when it's downloading and updating the virus signatures) seem to be the worst, but they also use the most CPU/memory/disk.

I have run tests on the drive and memory that all came back with no issues reported. I have a feeling this may have started after an update to Windows 8.1, but I can't be sure and I have no idea what update it may have been. It reminds of the old days when we'd have DOS interrupt conflicts;)

Last August I used what is outlined here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-update/system-file-check-sfc-scan-and-repair-system-files/bc609315-da1f-4775-812c-695b60477a93 and it helped for a while and the stutter disappeared. However it comes back. Repeated this couple of months ago and again it helped but only for a while. Sometimes it works fine but then all of a sudden it starts. I have not seen any particular patterns to it. Right now the CPU is at about 5 % and the audio is clean for the most part, but maybe once every 2 minutes there is a slight stutter.

I would appreciate any suggestions as this gets really old after a while.

Best regards,
Arnor Baldvinsson

Hi again,

While I was writing that post the audio was fine - listening to Pandora. However, when I hit the "send" button there was a flurry of audio stutter and mouse pointer lags while Chrome posted and refreshed the page. Then back to normal.

Best regards,
Arnor
