First of all my motherboard is a gigabyte 990XA-UD3.

Now when first build my PC I used 2x4 http:// of these sticks. They work fine at 2133 and all but I was thinking of adding 2x8 RAM to upgrade the memory capacity.

So the question is what I need to to watch out when I am going to choose the ram to be compatible with my 2x4 gskill ram ? And will they work together ?

Solution
There is no guarantee that it will work together. I would also check the http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3901# memory QVL. But generally ram is sold in kits because they sometimes don't play together. My advice would be to sell the 2x4gb ram and get 2x8gb. 24GB is too much, you can't use it, better 2x8gb in dual channel and save yourself the hassle. Or if you really need the 24gb, get some supported 2x8gb (at the same 2133 speed) and give it a try. If you can't boot with the 2x4 and 2x8 together, then just remove the 2x4 and get rid of them and run at 16.

Nono, ram speed, timings, they dont mean much, just the whole ram will run as fast as the slowest chip. It's just that even sometimes the same manufacturer, same model rams DON"T work together. It's not often but it happens, that's why rams are sold in kits which are proven to play nice together. You can get ram at totally different speed, from another manufacturer, plug it in and get it running without a problem. It's a matter of luck.

So its like a lottery then, it might or might not work if I understand right.

So what would you suggest in that case ? Should I buy 16gb dual channel and try it with my 2x4gb to see if it works, or wait a bit as 8gb is enough for me for now and buy 32gb quad channel when they are on sale again ?

Well personally I'm not sure if 16gb will be enough for a long time but still yeah gonna go for 2x8gb when they will be on sale, if they dont work with the already installed ram will use them to upgrade my other pc as it uses ddr3 too.

Thanks a lot for the help Gingerbread.
