Hi, I was trying to extract Kon Boot on my pen drive and my external HDD was also connected, kon boot setup files were in my external HDD and i was running it from my external HDD, I accidentally extracted it to my external HDD but the process was really fast once i clicked, it gave an error msg saying it couldn't be written. After that I couldn't access to my external HDD, it doesn't even show on My Computer, only gives power to the external HDD. BUt if i connect it to another PC it shows my external HDD but when I click it, it says to format my HDD.

external HDD brand and model - Transcend Portable Hard Drive StoreJet 25H3 USB 3.0 1TB

I used Partition Editor from Ultimate Boot CD to check my drive and this what I got ---

This is the error I got when I tried to mount my disk from Linux----

undevil: error 64: unable to determine device fstype - specify with -t

All I want is to recover my data back so can someone please help me.
Thank You!

I think the above details will be enough to give a solution to my problem

Hey there, Ashveen Impett!

Unfortunately, these errors indicate that the drive has failed and there's not much you can do about it. If it's possible, I'd recommend you to check the SMART data of your external from the Ubuntu live CD. Here's a thread that might help you get there.
Have you tried running any HDD diagnostic utility from Windows, though?

IMHO, the best thing you can do about your files is to get that HDD to a professional data recovery company. They are your best bet at getting any of those files back. :( If there is physical damage present on the HDD, it's highly unlikely that you'd be able to get anything off of it by yourself.

Good luck!

Can I use VMware Workstation (Virtual Box) to run Ubuntu and then try it??? I have another problem, my external HDD does not show on my laptop but it recognizes on other laptops. Why does this happen???

I went to Disk Management and saw that my external drive has no letter, so I named it G. then i saw my external HDD on my Computer.

when I try this command chkdsk /F /R /X G: I dont get anything, I just get "The type of the files ystem is FAT32"
I don't see data being checked or processed. Why is this happening???

Hey there again, Ashveen Impett!

You shouldn't try using the chkdsk command when dealing with so severely damaged external HDD. Unfortunately, this Windows utility could further worsen the corruption of your drive. The best utility you could use is an HDD brand-specific diagnostic tool from the manufacturer or a third-party testing tool like the ones in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
Such utilities could best indicate the amount of the damage and it could also help you determine the health and SMART status.

Give one of these a try and let me know what the SMART results show.

Hi again, Ashveen Impett!

It seems like both of your HDDs are in good condition. My guess is the enclosure got damaged or something in the connection to the drive but not the HDD itself. I'd not recommend you to crack the enclosure open because it would void the warranty on the drive if it's still covered by the manufacturer, so you'd lose your chance to send the faulty drive for RMA and receive a replacement.
Another important thing you should check if the model of the external has any kind of hardware encryption incorporated, if it does, you won't be able to access the data without an identical enclosure.

However, if the HDD is not covered by the warranty anymore, you can try plugging it internally via SATA and check if that will help you access your files.
Here's a thread you might find useful: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Best of luck!
