sudden appearance of mysterious desktop icon in Japanese, cannot delete; shape of a key, round part has percentages (like 40%, always changing) and key thread part has up arrow and 6.4K/s on top and down arrow 28.3K/s. Is this a virus? How to remove it? If I click on this icon, a panel opens up above it, like a menu, with icons and words (choices) in Japanese, which I do not read. Please help. Running Chrome, Windows 8.1, HP PC Compaq. Am relatively computer illiterate but q quick learner. Most grateful.

baidu= chinese garbage, definitely not japanese!

The best thing you can do is back up and reformat, usually there are other things also hidden on your computer.

Do you happen to have a grey import phone? I have a lenovo k3 note that was the chinese version. When I plugged it into my PC it attempts to install the phone suite in chinese.

This would be my first suspect. Is it listed in add/remove programs in the control panel?

could be something you clicked and installed this program, ok try to see if you can find this similar program in Installed programs in the control panel and try uninstalling it from add/remove programs

Kind Basroil, I am going to take your suggest and back up and reformat. I have a Western Digital My Passport but have never used it for complete back up--but I will learn. Ditto the reformatting. Thanks for the solidarity. Am a little scared about reformatting, but I have done more difficult things in life, so better to just get informed and dive in and do it.
