ok so i have got this build off of a friend and i tired enabling SLI but it didnt allow it. both cards show up on bios and afterburner etc. but when i go into nvidia control panel it doesn't show up. just brought a brand new SLI bridge and nope still no luck. im getting a D4 error on my mobo and im guessing that that is the problem and after searching i still dont know how to fix it.

ive put it in x16 and x8 just how the manual suggests
just tried swapping gfx card slots still no luck

Have you tried uninstalling MSI afterburner and Nvidia GeForce Experience, etc with DDU and then reinstalling? When I look at the customer reviews for your board on NewEgg, I find two interesting references to SLI:

"Cons: My first issue was getting SLI working on this board, which was easily rectified by disabling the on-chip GPU and updating the drivers for the Geforce cards."

"Some odd, but useful for testers, features really separate this board from others I've tested in the past. Being able to disable a PCI-E slot at the flip of a dipswitch could be useful for testing single-GPU vs Crossfire/SLI. You can even disable memory channels, if say you wanted to test 8GB vs 16GB, without removing the RAM sticks themselves."

***...
Could you please post full specs, including the power supply mfg and model? Also, when you say you bought the build from a friend, that includes the entire computer with both GTX 970's in SLI? If so, was SLI not working when he or she had the computer? Or did you just buy the two 970's from the friend?

I searched your motherboard's manual and on page 25 out of 124, there is a table with the settings of the DIP switches for disabling individual PCIe slots. I'll bet that's what's causing your issue. Please download the manual (link below) and check

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4949#manual

Addendum: The error you're getting, D4, I'm guessing is in reference to DIP 4, which is the specific switch for Disabling PCIEx4_2, listed on page 25 of the manual.

i had checked all the switches long before. i read somewhere that the D4 and D3 error can be caused by it searching for a disk drive which i dont have. finaly got SLI working by reinstalling everything. still get the error but everything is working so im just going to ignore it
