I'm using a 2Wire modem in the office (Frontier Communications) and installed an Ethernet cable to the living room (via basement ceiling) for what used to be my Xbox 360 only. Now I have an Xbox One and WiiU also that Id like hard wired. I used an old WNR2000 Netgear modem and connected all the game consoles it all seems to be working fine. Here's the thing. I didn't do anything else. No tweaking my PC, settings, nothing. Seems like a good thing , right? The downside is my Netgear WIFI is wide open and not password protected.

So 2 questions...

1. Did Windows 10 configure it all automatically or will I get billed for another IP address?

2. How can I password protect the Netgear modem? My PC doesn't even "see" it.

Thanks!

"The downside is my Netgear WIFI is wide open and not password protected."
Read your user manual to learn how to secure your wireless connection.

"Did Windows 10 configure it all automatically"
Configure what? You modem, no. Your router, no. If you have your PC connected using a wire then there isn't any configuring needed for that.

"will I get billed for another IP address?"
That should never happen as long as you use a router to split/share the connection from the modem.

"How can I password protect the Netgear modem?"
Read the manual, typically what you can do is connect it using a wire then type in the router's IP address into a web browser then you can setup the security.

"My PC doesn't even "see" it."
Does your PC have a wireless card/adapter/USB device? It wouldn't see anything if you don't have a wireless card or wireless built into your motherboard.

When I type in the address to get netgear setting, it's blocked. No such website etc with Frontier logo. Like 2wire modem and Netgear one don't want to play nice together.
