Better CPU for Gaming?

Which is better for gaming: a 2.5ghz i7 or a 3.1ghz i5? Both are quad core, don't know the model numbers of either. Thanks!

The higher clocked quad core I5 would perform best. Games benefit from having a high clockspeed. Both architectures are quad core but the I7 2.5ghz will perform slight worse then the I5 at 3.1.

The i5 computer would have only 8gb ram, but the i7 would have 16. Does that majorly alter your recommendation? Thanks
