For Gaming Is i7 6700k Significantly Better Than i5 6600k?

Hi there,

I am putting together a parts list for a new gaming PC. I am looking at CPUs and my two most obvious choices are the Intel core i76700k and the Intel core i56600k. The i7 is much more expensive and I am debating wether it is necessary. This PC will be paired with a GTX980Ti and will be used for simply gaming. I've heard i7's are better for rendering and video editing and don't have as much of an impact on gaming. If you can please shed some light on my confusion. Thanks in advance.

Generally speaking, no it isn't. There are a few newer games that do show a benefit from having an i7 and hyperthreading, but right now they are few and far between. Either way you'll get 60FPS with a good GPU, but an i7 might be beneficial if you're aiming for a higher framerate eg. 120FPS. If you can afford to get an i7 without making cuts elsewhere eg. getting a cheaper GPU or forgoing an SSD, it might be worth it to get an i7 if you're not planning on doing another upgrade for a long time. If you have to make sacrifices to be able to afford the i7, then don't bother and just get the i5.
