hello everyone.

i bought a 4k monitor so want to upgrade my system for 4k gaming...following system is what i am using now

i5 3470
msi b75g43 motherboard
8gb vengeance 1600mhz
sapphire r9 290 4gb oc tri x
antec 1000watt psu
ssd

i was thinking upgrading from:

i5 3470 to 3770k
8gb to 16gb (2000-2400mhz)
r9 290 oc 4gb tri x in Crossfire mode

will it be enough for lets say GTA5 35-60fps.
cant go with nvidia route as i do some programming api of amd is favorable.

thanks

i wouldn't expect to get max settings (especially AA), but it should be very playable with decent settings

this shows performance on 290x crossfire, but 290 shouldnt be too far behind. though these benchmarks show some weird results, in some cases a single card outperforming the pair.

this video shows the i7-3770k with a gtx 970 still pulling 40-50 fps on very high

im curious, how does your current setup do on the new monitor? it seems like you should already be capable of at least 30+ fps.

all advance graphics settings are disabled....OFF
at 3200 x 1800 i get 33-40fps outdoors fighting, racing. indoors 60fps stable

at 3840 pixels × 2160 i get 26-35fps outdoor scenes. indoors 45-55fps
* the following settings are for 3200x1800, if i want to go full 4k i reduce the Texture/shadow/shaders from V.High to high and it gives me 30-37fps.

FXAA- On
MSAA- Off
Vsync- On
Population density- MAX
Population variety- Max
distance scaling- max
Texture/shaders/shadow quality - Very high
Reflection- Ultra
Ref MSAA-Off
water/particle quality- very high
grass quality- ultra
soft shadows- amd chs
post fx- ultra
motion blur- 0
Depth of field - On
Anistropic filtering- x16
ambient occulution- High
Tessellation- Very high

well thats not horrible, you are getting decent performance. the good news is, i dont think your CPU is causing any kind of bottleneck. the differences in your results are based directly (and proportionally) on the workload of the GPU and its ability to process it. what is your CPU usage range during gaming? is there any time that you feel the CPU is holding you back?

a second 290 will probably bring you right where you want to be, and you could probably find one used for ~$300. same with the 3770k. or you could drop the $600 on a Fury X and even better frame rate... and dont forget the next gen of GPUs come out this year, theyre supposed to "double performance per watt" says AMD.

gotta get the 3770k anyway coz i need to do some matlab and rendering stuff. nothing major though!
290 is around $270 while fury is around $700 where i live.
next gen gpus probably $400+.

so should i move with another r9/3770k/16gb. 1 more thing
my mobo is a b75 g43 msi. on the b75 chipset how much can i overclock the 3770k. -4.5 should be pretty good.

yea, a second 290 would be advisable then. as a rule of thumb, a single stronger GPU is better than 2 weaker ones. but if you just want a nice little boost, crossfire will give it to you.

B series chipset isn't really meant for overclocking. yea, usually it's possible, but a lot of the time you can only adjust BCLK and multiplier, but not voltage. if thats the case, expect to get ~500 MHz overclock (putting the 3770K at 4 GHz). heat becomes an issue if you ARE able to fully overclock, especially with r9 290 x 2 in the case. upgrading to say i5-6500 with a b150 motherboard and DDR4 memory would be a better use of the money (depending on local prices).
