Hi Guys,

So i decided to apply the arctic silver 5 compound on my i7 3770k processor. My idle temperatures before application was around 45-47C at idle.
I cleaned the heatsink and the processor with some alcohol today and applied a pea size drop of the compound (didn't spread it with a plastic card) I booted the system up and noted my idle temp was 37C. I then ran a few applications like photoshop and VMware and it didn't go above 50C.

Now the problem is that the system is back idling at around 45-47C. I am confused. Is this normal? I was hoping it stay below 40C. What temperature is normal at idle? Its been about an hour since i applied the paste.

To tell you the truth, I think you are stressing over nothing here. Your temps looked normal before and still are to be honest, Ivy runs hot already. Enjoy your rig, temps are 100% good. Now, if your goal is to absolutely run your CPU in the 30's (for whatever reason), invest on an AIO water cooler. Thermal compound is not going to lower the temp below normal specs alone. It sounded, according to your previous temp, that the previous compound was doing its job already and so it the new one. 40s in idle is the normal specs for your chip, if you want to go lower, than upgrade your CPU cooler but know that your temps are pretty normal. Are you overclocking, or planning on it? If so, might as well upgrade the cooling system.

I shall look at the temps after a few days. I am just disappointed that SpeedFan showed me 37C at idle and then that kept climbing after a few hours.

I am using the stock heatsink and fan. I was hoping arctic silver helps bring down idle temp below 40C, and i was glad to see it drop below 40C after application, but only for a while. If these are normal temperatures of an ivy bridge then i wont panic. It does touch 70C while gaming. I do not plan on overclocking it yet.

No problem, another thing to consider is your ambient temp, your room temp plays a role as well. If you want to getspecific, take your ambient temp right outside of the computer's intake and add about ~8C, that should give you the optimum idle temp for your core temp. this is optimum, 70's while gaming you are still fine.
