Says headphones are plugged in when they aren't

My headphones are not plugged in yet the computer thinks that they are, and when I put the volume on maximum there simply is no sound. Anyone with suggestions?

There is a physical switch in the headphone port that tells the computer that something is plugged in. That switch is apparently stuck. You can try plugging the headphones in a few times to see if you can jar that switch loose. There isn't an easy solution if that doesn't work.
