I work with Adobe products primarily, some large format image work, broadcast tv editing, AE, and flash, which take a pretty hefty workhorse. I've never built a computer before, so all thoughts and advice are appreciated. I would ALSO love to hear what I could get for closer to $1500, but here's my $2k idea - and seriously, if I left out something important, I have no idea what it is, so tell me please!

And, also, too: What things should I watch out for/be careful of for building a pc? I'm a little nervous about this whole process..

Thanks, guys!

That's a sound build. Things to note however

- You'll have quad channel memory controller, so make use of it with quad channel memory. If you do switch to 32GB, definitely go 4x8GB
- Switch to a Samsung 850 Evo 250GB for quality and better customer support
- Switch to Western Digital blue 1TB for better warranty/support and smaller failure rate
- If you're not going to be gaming you may benefit more from a Quadro card, depending on the applications you'll be utilizing.

Thermal compound, sound cards, and case fans are wastes of money no matter what your budget is. You simply don't need these things. Leave these off and invest more in better hardware. I'd go X99 but a Xeon on this level simply isn't necessary.

I would do something like this:

Use the rest of the money for monitor and OS license of your choosing.

Yeah, I'll get there eventually. But this is what I can build rn, and I thought it'd be easy to add in more RAM later...

I...don't need a sound card? Sound is very important to what I do. Are you saying that your selected motherboard will deliver good enough sound for professional editing? And isn't heat like enemy number one?

Interesting - thanks for the tips. I do plan to get to 32gb, but I was going to wait for that upgrade for a few months. My gaming consists of flash-based escape the room stuff, so I definitely am not worried about it for that, but I use Premiere, After Effects, and Flash heavily - what advantages would a Quadro have? Or, I guess, what do the Quadro line cards do better at?

The 3.3GHz 5820K is slightly more attractive as a CPU because of the speed, all of the time.
If you are going to 32GB then two 8's make more sense but stretching now makes for an overall better workspace.

I'm also a big storage nut. Fast performance is enhanced with multiple drives. Working files on SSD and 2TB blacks
for project storage. Having separate SSD's for system and scratch disks is ideal.

Again, what are you currently using and where does it fall down?

You'd have a pretty hefty build with a 980 Ti and a 5820K.

A Quadro card would be a consideration if you were using 10 bit or
needed double precision calculations in great amounts. A Xeon
setup would complement that if your machine spent all day every
day rendering video.
