You can't call it a pcie port since other connections also use pcie like usb 3.1, sata-e, and m.2. It actually doesn't have a thunderbolt port but just an internal aic (add in card) connector which is odd since you can just get a pcie add in card too. Thunderbolt is a data (like usb) and video port combined into one. Connect devices like usb and also connect monitors and use the igpu. Tb 1 and 2 use mini displayport but 3 uses usb type c as the port. Tb 3 actually combines more connections; it has hdmi, dp, usb, and pcie protocols.
If it'll be popular is not known but not even usb 3.1 has started to transition into components yet. Maybe later in the year with intel and amd releasing new chipsets, it'll get native support and tb 3 may...
