Hello everyone. New to post here, but not new to browse. I will be getting an Asus ROG G751JY laptop soon and I had a few questions. It will come with Windows 10, Intel i7 4720HQ, 16GB DDR3, GTX980M 4GB, 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD. I'm getting it at a decent price and was wondering about upgrading both storage mediums. I read briefly on this site that 128GB SSD should be fine for a boot drive, but I am considering bumping it to an M.2 version. So switching my SSD to M.2 and switching HDD to 2TB.

My first question: If upgrading to M.2 for boot drive, should I just keep the capacity at 128GB or will I see any significant gains from making it 256GB?

My second question(combo): During the installation process, how should I go about it? I know the OS will be on one or the other drives. Should I move it between drives and change drives one by one? Should I load the OS to a USB drive and switch both SSD and HDD out and then boot from the USB to install everything?

I am a newbie in this particular subject and have never tried making a USB drive the boot drive for this kind of operation. Also I have read that the G751 can utilize M.2. Does the M.2 come with the appropriate mounting bracket or do I need to buy that separately?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide me. :)

I know while it might seem like just buying a laptop with these things already handled would be simpler, I was able to find this laptop for a good price [cheaper than a World of Warcraft capable laptop from 10 years ago or so(256MB VRAM days)]. My issue is when I look for what this G751JY has plus the M.2 and 2TB HDD, the price skyrockets. Also websites where I could come close either drop the CPU down to 4710HQ or the GPU to a GTX 960M/970M. There were even websites where the configure tab didn't actually have more than 1 GPU or CPU option.

You can use acronis to clone a drive as well as expand it into the unused space, I have many times without issue. I'll upload an iso of the boot disc I use.

I'm sure other disk cloning utilities can do this as well, but I've used acronis for a long time, it's easy to use, and has good hard drive wiping standards included, as well as network cloning.

Likely not, it would be in the bay itself, but I know some manufacturers do not include the bracket if the laptop did not come with the SSD, so the best option would be to check ebay for one for that machine. The manufacturer might send you one if you contact them as well.
