What does it mean when I get the message that my drive is not formatted properly when I plug it into a USB to SATA Adapter

I recently purchased a Unitek USB 3.0 to IDE+SATA Adapter. When I plug the first 500gb Hitachi HDD into the adapter I get a pop up window saying check device information fail. Check device status. Windows gives me an error message telling me I need to format the drive before I can use it. The second 500gb HDD when plugged in does nothing. The two HDD's come from an Alienware M17R4 with the drives in a RAID configuration.

Is it entirely possible your RAID hardware formatted those drives, say under a Linux OS, and now you are plugging them directly into a windows PC(?) and Windows says "hey, not NTFS, not FAT, I don't recognize." As long as you don't need any data in there, partition and format at will via Windows.

If your RAID hardware failed and you are attempting to retrieve data out of those puppies, am no help whatsoever. :(

Sounds like you don't have a good connection/the computer can't put out enough power on the usb port to power the hard drive. Try another port, and if that doesn't work, an externally powered usb hub.

Thanks jsmithepa. I had a feeling it had something to do with the raid config. I was hoping to get some data off the hard drives so it looks like I might have to fix the laptop to get my data back.
