So I've narrowed it down to two choices, and though the Y50 (i7 4710hq) has better specs, as it is an older model, I found it the same price as the Y700 (i5 6300hq).

Will the older Y50 perform noticeably better than the Y700? Using it for university, and some light gaming (LoL, Borderlands, Skyrim).

Y50 also has GTX 860M and 8GB RAM DDR3 Y700 has GTX 960M, and 8GB RAM DDR4

So for my games, is it better to go for the one with the i5 (DDR4) but better graphics card (Y700), or the i7 (DDR3) with older graphics card (Y50)?

And will the Y50 last longer with an i7? And how much difference will an i7 make in everyday tasks, and things like running Skype plus playing LoL?

Well then it comes to your personal preference if you want more raw power with the i7 or more newer features with the i5.
After you found better version here is what's left of the pros and cons:
1) i7 4720HQ
- older CPU + but more powerful
- ddr3
2) i5 6300HQ
+ newer CPU - little bit less powerful
+ ddr4
+ little bit less heat since its 14nm = more battery
----------------
The graphics are the same so.

I would still go with the i5 model because its a laptop I will use for university as you said so you will want more battery and fast response. However if you choose to go with the i7 it would be still fine...

So on the one side we have the old model: with i7 4710hq and some newer model with i5 6300hq.
Well if I was on your place, I would prefer Y700(with i5 6300hq), not only because its newer CPU but because it will be more future proofed and it uses DDR4.
Another + is the graphics card where the 960m is X times more sufficient than the 860m for your light gaming experience.
I know you think the old one with the i7 would be more powerful but personal I think when you are comparing mobile CPUs there is not a big difference there so the newer would be better choice here.
In conclusion, I would 100% go with the Y700 since its newer model with DDR4, better graphics, future proofed experience.
