Hello guys,

Update 1 :
Thanks for the replies. After some research, I m finally thinking of r9 380x. What are your opinions?

Original prob:

Very soon I m going to upgrade from i3 4130 to i5 4460. I will also be upgrading my gtx 750. But that is where the problem lies. I have three choices: gtx 960 4gb strix, msi r9 380 4gb, zotac gtx 970.

I was keen on getting gtx 970 as it can run pretty much everything on 1080p ultra at 60fps lock. But then I got to that although it manages to gets 60fps it has some stuttering issues which is prevalent on all new recent games like gta 5 , watch dogs, etc.

This is a very confusing state in which I have fallen lately and cant seem to decide. The 960 strix seems to be a good card but how will it fare in the next 3 years is something which I doubt. The 380 is not so great compared to gtx 960 (leading only by 4-5 fps) and 380x is still not available here(india).

Should I go with 970? Or should I go with 960?( I dont want to go amd way as they are power hogs and have some issues with their drivers)

Any recommendation will be gracefully thanked although keep in mind I dont want to change my new system atleast for the next 3 years and want to play all new games at minimum of high settings at 60fps.

Thanks.

The 970 will be future proofing you more, and you'll be more likely to play ultra 60FPS in 2-3 years as I feel the 960 won't be able to deliver this, however the 960 will still be a very relevant card in that time frame in my opinion. 960 is good power/cost.

970 would be good for future proofing, however in 3 years who knows what the graphics market will be... For all we know 960 and 970 might be obsolete. The next gen of chips will be far superior than the 970 anyway(obviously, pascal will be 16GB +), personally I'd go for the 960 as the power/cost ratio is so good.

I know that 970 is the best of the bunch but all i m worried about is the stuttering issues. I dont think that 3.5gb is less as even the more demanding titles barely use 2gb but still i get to hear that there are some performance issues.

What are your opinions on it?

Hey m8,

Sure that pascal would be like the next maxwell but by the time the gpus come out, it will already be sept. So that options stands null and void. However, I m thinking of locking down on asus gtx 960 4gb strix as it comes factory oced and offers a better value but I m still a bit skeptical on my chances to play games in 2017-18 at ultra or high at 60fps.

What do you have to say on this?

Btw, thanks for the quick reply.

It's hard to say how demanding games will be in that time frame. I don't think you'd get 60FPS at ultra in 2-3 years, maybe high, but then again it depends on the resolution you play at as well. I purchased the 7870 when it was a high end card probably 3 years ago, I still have the same card and it can play demanding games (1080p) however not at 60FPS. I get around 50 on Fall out 4, same goes for Witcher 3, get around 40-50FPS both ultra on 1080p.

But as mentioned, who knows what's in store for us in 2017-18..

If you don't have plan to go with AMD, my recommend to your situation is wait until Pascal release.

GTX 970 comes with 4GB, and yes, some games reach at least 3.7GB and the problems start BUT still is a great card and sure it will have futureproof. About future games? Well, like Joshua's post said, we dont know the future market.

Its your choice, but reply if you have some issues/questions.
