I just upgraded to a gtx 970. if i put in my old gt 635 in with it as a dedicated physx card will there be a performance increase in physx games? is there anything else the second gpu could do?

Solution
It will also draw electricity and emit heat. There are very few GPU accelerated games out there so unless you play any of the ~25 games that can use it it's fairly pointless to do this.

I tried that once with an AMD/Nvidia combo setup. If I remember right I upgraded to an AMD HD7970 and ran physx with the old GTX280. Negligible gain at best. If you have a modern CPU then you are already running the physics software. Its part of the nvidia driver package.
I wouldn't waste the time to be honest, or the electricity.
If you want to go dual card get another 970 and run sli.
