I cannot make Internet Explorer the Default Browser? Please help!

So I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.

I know many don't like Internet Explorer but I like it because I think it's the best looking web browser and I love the simplified minimal interface (internet explorer 9-11). It's also the easiest to use IMO. In other browsers you have like 10 different folders to store your webpages, in IE it's just one "Favourites" page as always. And you can get add-ons in IE just like any other browser.

Anyway, I have Opera installed on my computer, which I use occasionally. However, try as I might, it just won't let me make Internet Explorer my default browser.
When I click on a link to a webpage or to email someone, Opera pops up (and it usually takes ages to load using Opera). When I click on an Email link, it also starts opening a new tab every second just on it's own and if I didn't stop it it would eventually crash my computer.

I have tried going to Tools<Internet Options<Programs.
It then says that Internet Explorer is not the default browser. So I click "Make Default". However, it doesn't work and when I got back it says (you guessed it) "Internet Explorer is not the default browser".

I have also tried going to Start<Default Programs<Set your Default Programs and trying to make Internet Explorer the default one for all file types. However, when I select Opera it won't let me untick the boxes under the Extensions and Protocols.

So is anyone else having this Problem?

Advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Likely, there is a startup app that is restricting your options.
run msconfig and see if there are any apps you do not want.
Use google to find out what the unknowns do.

You also might want to run malwarebytes free edition.

And, why not just uninstall opera?

I uninstalled Opera and Internet Explorer is now the default browser. Problem Solved. Thanks.
