Windows 10 recognizes my portable hard drive but it does not show up in the file manager. I know it's working as I can find it on my Vista laptop. Any thoughts?

Welcome, Paul!

I'd recommend you to check Device Manager and Disk Management and check if the portable HDD is recognized there. If it is, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling it as a device ( https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725782.aspx ). Once you reboot your Win 10 system and plug the external drive back in, it should automatically install itself.
If that doesn't work, I'd suggest you to try resolving the issue by changing the drive letter of the portable drive in Disk Management. You can refer to this tutorial from our knowledge base about drive letter assignment in Windows that can walk you through the steps: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=RVgbPl

Hope these help. Keep us posted! :)

I'm thinking it may be an MBR or partition problem. Open the start menu and type in "disk management" and open that. By default, this program searches for new disks when it opens. Assuming it's a partition or MBR problem, you will get a prompt when it opens that asks you what you want to do with it.
