Ram purchased at separate times even if identical could be incompatible.

There is always a chance they won't run together.

Best when purchased in matching pairs \ sets from the same retail pack.

Rule of thumb when buying RAM is to try your best to match frequencies and speed exactly. Although these haven't been known to cause major problems, people have reported them.

So to answer your question, I would avoid doing it that way and make sure the two exactly match. Also, verify with your MB manufacture if you're unsure what the board maxes out at.
