I have 4 2gb sticks of ram installed (2x2 kits), no problems with it but i realized i probably installed them wrong.

The slots are like this:

Dimm 1 - orange
Dimm 2 - green
Dimm 3 - orange
Dimm 4 - green

I should be installing the sets by the color right?

Right now i just put the pairs side by side.

Solution
Install the 1st kit in Orange and the 2nd kit in green. If there is a timing difference between the 2 kits that could cause your system to run slower. Usually it is better to have one 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) then 2x 4GB kits (2x 2GB).

The colors separate the channels. Channel 1 or 2, A or B. When using just 2 sticks you'll want them to be in the same color slots. Doesn't matter which color, that means you'll be in dual channel mode which is how DDR works.
If you were to populate one orange and one green you'd get 4gb of ram in single channel mode, not good.
Since you are using all 4 slots you'll have the full 8gb running properly in dual channel mode.

Don't get caught up on the colors, that's just a brand thing. My gigabyte board is gray and black, but it still represents channel 1/A and 2/B.
