I have hooked up the 24 pin into the mobo but there is also a atx 12v. Should i hook that one up too? Also my xfx 850 is fully wired but each cable is long and has multiple pin connectors. Can i remove what i dont need?

If your motherboard has an ATX 4/8 connector, you need to use it. Extra wires can be removed from the PSU if your not going to use them, but I wouldn't in case you want to add something or use the PSU in another build or even if you have to RMA it.
