Hi, I have just built a new pc and loaded windows 10 onto my SSD without any issues. Now I want to install my new WD Black 2TB HDD but I am having issues. The drive is brand new so nothing should be on it. I have made sure all my connections are in properly with working cables. The Drive is recognised in the bios and under disk management it shows up.

The problem is when i go to right click it and initialize it the option is greyed out. The HDD is named Disk 0 - Unknown and Not initialized. It also says that it is offline when I right click it and that the device it not yet ready. This can all be seen from the photo below. The device status says it is working properly...

So where do I go from here to fix this? Is there something obvious I have missed or forgotten? Please help as I have been trying to fix this for a while now and its getting quite frustrating. Thanks!

Hi there lykrain,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
So you've tried using different cables right? You can get the ones from your SSD. Also, you can try the drive on different SATA ports. You will be 100% sure if there is something wrong with the drive or with your system if you just attach it to a different computer.
Another thing you can do is to just go to your MOBO's website and update all the drivers.

In case the issue persists, you can test the drive with both short and extended DLG tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=hJai1p

If nothing works, then I guess you can contact the place you got it from or WD's Support and eventually RMA it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=BRf0ec

Let me know how this goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks for the quick response. I just redid all the drivers and made sure they were up to date. Yes I did try with all the sata cables and on all the ports- the problem persists. The driver update didn't fix the issue however the Initialize disk is no longer greyed out and I can click on it.

If I go with GPT I get an error message stating, "the specified disk is not convertible because the disk size is less then the minimum size required for GPT disks."

If I go with MBR I get the message, "Incorrect function." so I am not sure where to go from here...

Also I don't have another computer available to plug my HDD into :/

I have also tried the short and extended DLG tests using the WD software - both come with the error, "SMART enable operation error." and the test stops.

I'm not sure what it is with your drives but I just bought a Western Digital Black for my Notebook and I could not get Windows to initialize the drive until I installed 3rd party software (AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard --Free download, btw) and then after running the free software tool, I created a new partition with it and was able to format it. Windows then saw the drive and it initialized with no issues.
