EDIT: Ordered a new motherboard and it worked, so the old motherboard must have been dead. Thanks for the help!

Hi everyone,

as of now, I have a no post. The red light on the motherboard lights up when I turn on the PSU and the fan of the HSF (Hyper 212 Evo) continues to spin. But there's no beep and no post on my monitor. I consulted this list before posting.

I'm going to explain what happened in chronological order:

Yesterday I tore apart my computer, which I bought used, because I wanted to upgrade it. At that time, it ran fine on integrated graphics. I wanted to insert it into a bigger case, add a new HSF and a GPU. So the CPU worked beforehand, I didn't need to take it out and I didn't.

For my first time, it worked out quite well in the beginning. I cleaned the CPU with kitchen roll paper, I made sure to always ground myself before touching any part, I put them on newspaper if they were not worked on, I followed this guide and read the corresponding pages in the motherboard manual.

I might've used to much thermal paste, even though it was just one drop, and I had to adjust the HSF a bit after the drop down on the CPU but the HSF assembly went fine for the most part. After that I prepared the case, inserted the motherboard, connected all the cables and peripherals and went on to attach the graphics card. Being a 290, it is quite huge and it didn't fit, so I carefully tried sowing off a small part of the case. The sliver didn't fall on the motherboard, because it was standing upright. I didn't saw off very much, because I quickly gave up on inserting the graphics card and went on. The cables were all in their places and there were no loose screws on the motherboard. So I tried to fire it up, but it didn't post.

Things I tried:

  • - I disconnected everything apart from the EATX-cable for the motherboard, the power switch jumper, the HSF and its fan cable. Yes, I also connected the 8-pin CPU cable.
    - Checking the cables, I found out that there's a pin missing on the 18-pin motherboard cable imgur
    - I tried resetting the BIOS by detaching the CMOS and changing the jumper
    - I activated the monitor to make sure it's searching for a signal

Things I'm gonna try:

  • [strike]- Breadboarding (in progress)[/strike] EDIT: Done, still doesn't post
    - [strike]If it's the thermal paste: Leave it running for 20 minutes to dissolve thermal paste, after that: clean CPU with Alcohol[/strike] EDIT2: It's not the thermal paste, really clean job as far as I can tell imgur
[strike]- work through this guide[/strike] EDIT3: Had another PSU lying around, tried it, didn't work. The same result as always so far: Red LED, CPU fan spins, but no post. Since I can't put in another CPU, I'll pray it's the board and order a new one. FU*K!

Thanks for reading through the whole damn thing, at this point I'm really frustrated and grateful for any help.

Solution
You're not sure it's your motherboard either, so replacing it might not get the job done to be honest. Though I would agree there is a high chance that's the problem.

Thank you, though it would've been a relief to just exchange the cable and not the motherboard.
