I am thinking about getting another gtx 960 SC to run an sli setup, would I have to get the exact same gpu or could i just get a 960? I have the SC 2gb, but for the second one would I have to get another one of the exact same type? Or could i just go with a semi cheaper 960 option?

It does not have to be the exact, same card, but the faster card will slow down to match the speed of the slower card. That said, I would agree with chrisITguy in that you would be better served with a better single card solution, but given that you already have a GTX 960, no card would be worth the cost of upgrading.

They need to be the exact same. Lower end cards are not recommended with SLI, as you will have even less gains than higher end. You will not ever gain 2X the performance. You will be much better off just buying a better card.
