ASUS GPU losing/corrupted drivers after reboot

Hi, I have an ASUS EAH6500 DC graphics card. It's worked fine in the 3 years I've had it installed but recently the drivers are getting corrupted after rebooting (after login a popup states the card is missing drivers or they've become corrupted. The card still shows in Device Manager with the correct latest driver version. I attempt to roll-back drivers and the process hangs and doesn't complete. Ran the autodetectutility and it reports I have the latest driver. Display is altered though and it's clear it's running off the onboard Intel graphics. I have altered nothing and haven't installed any new hardware for more than 2 years.

Two things occurred to me:

1. Driver being used is a recent (2015) release which got installed automatically several months ago. Checking the details my card does not show up as supported hardware for the release. Legacy support page seems to indicate that the release is okay with the HD 6500 though.

2. Issue developed after running Windows Update. Only installed critical updates. Every time the PC reboots after this update the problem reoccurs.

Rebooted into Safe Mode and cleaned all AMD drivers using Guru3D DDU. Attempted install of driver that I know works fine (2011 release) but installation is halted with a (ati driver failed to load detection driver) message popup. Tried this a bunch of times, same result.

So only thing I've tried that works (temporarily) is System Restore which restores the GPU to working order. Trouble is after reboot back to square one.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.
