csgo gtx 970 fps drop issues

I have the following specs:asus gtx 970 strix
amd fx 8320 black
ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
8gb ram
550 thermaltake psu
i get around 140 fps when playing with all low settings and 4:3 resolution, but when i engage with an enemy for more than 3 seconds my fps drops to 20-40 and stays there for at least 20 seconds

that is crazy low fps for a gtx 970. Do you have the screen plugged into the mobo or the gpu? do you have nvidia driver installed?

That was my first thought as well but the the FX CPUs don't have integrated graphics so it has to be running off the GPU.

Monitor your gpu usage using something like precision x or gpu z during gaming and your cpu usage with task manager. Post your usages here.
