Should I go ahead and buy a 4k monitor or just buy a 1440p monitor?

Ok so I'm planning on buying a single Gigabyte GeForce gtx 980 ti 6gb etreme gaming oc edition gpu and was wondering if I should buy the asus rog pg278Q or if I should go ahead and get a 4k monitor like the Acer xb280HK?

Solution
Despite of the pros and cons of getting a good gaming 4k monitor or those 34" 1440p 21:9 curve IPS GSync monitors, for now, I would recommend to stick with a 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor with GSync, since you have a GTX980Ti.
e.g. ASUS PG279Q or Acer XB2711HU

A 1440p 144Hz 16:9 IPS monitor with GSync is at the moment the most overall attractive solution for hardcore gamers.
Those monitors are like having the perfect balance of refresh rate/speed, resolution, image quality and price for today. (I know that the price is still extremely premium for most of us)
A single 980 Ti at 4K should get you around 40 frames-per-second in most AAA games, so if you're happy with that, or if you're happy to lower some advanced graphical settings to try and achieve a higher frame rate, then I'd go for 4K.

As games become more demanding you'll likely need a second 980 Ti, however, so that's something to bear in mind.

By the time a 4k gpu is viable, 4k monitors will be a *lot* cheaper. Pay over the odds for a limited experience now or wait for the better hardware - your patience and wallet will decide :) Personally there isn't enough performance available to make the jump for me, so I'll be waiting, but ymmv.

Personally I would stick with 1080p or 1440p at the moment, but there will be bleeding-edgers here who think that is a daft approach.

For me the lack of a mainstream 60fps+ / Ultra settings GPU for 4k means I'm really not interested in 4k yet - and a good monitor is silly money. I'd rather wait for HDR 4k + a GTX995ti (or whatever it will be called) to push it along at the rates my 970 does for me at 1080p. I prefer effects and FPS over resolution - if you prefer resolution over effects, go for it - your money, as long as you are happy with the decision, doesn't matter which way you go :)

I love my PG278Q, best monitor ive ever purchased. I will never go back to 1080P. Right now 4k isnt justified for its price and it makes NO sense whatsoever to buy a 4k monitor just to end up lowering your quality settings to achieve better FPS. That kind of defeats the purpose of wanting a 4k monitor. 1440P is where its at right now, im going to wait for new GPUs to drop and see where they stand in the 4k realm before I ever decide to upgrade.
