Hey guys,

I built a PC a couple of years ago and I'm having a recurring problem of it freezing for short periods then returning to normal, on a frequent basis. It's also running much slower than normal.

I've tried reinstalling Windows 7 and upgraded to Windows 10 but still no change.

It started by making a kind of chirp sound but that stopped and the freezing stated.

It does sound like the hard drive could be the cause, since you mentioned chirping. Heat also can cause random slowdowns and freezing. I would also check the cpu heatsink just to make sure it isn't full of dust. That will cause the cpu to overheat, and throttle down or even freeze.

You can get a hard drive tester to see if it reports anything.

I've run tests using SeaTools and my HD is fine.

I see why you said the HD might be the problem due to the chirping sound. I should have said the sound was coming through my speakers not from the HD itself.

Can I also add that both my chassis fans went a while back. I changed them straight away but my case got very hot once. Would this have caused damage?

I wouldn't think so, but it is possible. Most stuff now a days are made to throttle down to avoid damage. It does still sound like heat issues possibly. What is your cpu temp while running a load?

I should also add, does it freeze under certain conditions, or even when nothing is happening? It could be a driver issue. Have you updated any drivers recently? that would carry over even in a reinstall if you used the same driver over. Try running in safe mode with networking. Surf the net, and do some basic stuff. See if it happens there.
