Hi.
Iv just purchased a second hand PC. But the cd drive tray won't open. The green light flashes for a bit. You can here a couple of clicks then nothing. The paper clip trick does not work either.
Which lead me to believe a faulty drive. So I replaced it with a new, but... The same problem!

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I know of two things as far as cd/dvd drives go:
It can be locked shut by software, thus if computer is on, you might be unable to open it.
It can ALWAYS be opened with paperclip while power is off or paperclip/drive is faulty.

The paperclip thing works since it physically pushes the cogwheel which opens the tray to open it so if neither the drive or paperclip is faulty, it works.

Of course I could assume that you have prior experience with drives and paperclips and this isn't your first try but still, mentioning it anyway:
As side note, some drives need somewhat decent amount of force for the tray to open so if the paperclip is of frail/tiny variety, it might be hard to reach far enough or push it in with enough force.

Edit:

Edit:
Of course, I'm not sure if the drive has access to all the power it needs. It could be that led's are used by 5V and motor to open the tray with 12V
So it could be also faulty power cable.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
The tray did open with the paper clip once the computer was shut down.
I uninstalled a free cd burning software programme I recently downloaded (which I had used on a different computer perfectly fine) and it seems to have done the trick!

Thanks
