Overclocking a xeon e5450 beyond 3ghz

Hey guys I just bought a xeon e5450 hardmodded to fit in standard 775 boards to replace my even more obselete conroe e6600 core 2 duo. I was hoping to get an overclock between 3.2-3.6ghz but can only get upto 3.078ghz which is quite pathetic. When I set the bus speed past 342mhz(multiplier is 9) in the bios it wont boot.

Can anyone help me out with any tips or diagnosing my bottleneck?
I do appreciate this is an old system but its ideal for me as it sits in a unused room and renders.

The system I'm running is micro atx so of course the components arent great but heres the spec:


  • I'm running a GA-G41MT-S2P which I had to patch with xeon microcodes to get sse4.1(and probably other features) working.
    I'm assuming my ram is the issue its corsair memory from scan which I bought years ago to last me till I upgraded to an i5 system. its 1.50v memory and I dont know if that is an issue with the overclocking I'm attempting.

    I have 3 power supplies I can use a 550w xclio bronze rated, cheap atx-500(non rated) and a 650w corsair gold rated power supply. So far I've only tried the xclio and cheapo atx-500 but intend on trying my better corsair.
    The cooler is a POC. Very old air cooler with fresh thermal paste that runs at 65-70c when cpu is stressed.
    Using the built in graphics as I dont have a spare graphics card currently.

Hello... Yes on a S775 board your FSB is very limited... the multiplier is set at 9 and that is your limiting factor, can you get 9.5-10?
You also need to down clock your memory as you increase the FSB, your memory will be out of clock sync with some settings so try one or two higher on next attempt... reset/clear bios if you get into boot trouble.

You could try and raise the Voltage on the MCH/north bridge, add cooling/fan, mod heatsink... but you will be un-happy with the final results for your efforts.

So far the bios setting I have changed are turning ec1 off and changing the cpu bus speed, have tried turning up the vcore but higher voltages still prevented booting when I tried turning up the cpu bus speed.
The e5450 has a locked multiplier, there is an option to add 0.5 to the mutltiplier but the setting doesnt seem to work.

There is a video of a guy here with the exact same board getting 3.2ghz so annoying.

My brothers asus g41 will do 3.6ghz on a dual core e8600 which has a 10x with the asus over clocking option of +10%

I just changed my mobo to an asus p5g41t-m lx and that has a much higher fsb wall of 391mhz and allows me to add on upto 150mv.
New overclock is 3.52ghz I would have liked 3.6 but my overclock is where I want it to be and my benchmark score is a bit lower than it should be as Im only running my memory in single channel currently.

Im very aware that I could get 4ghz+ on a atx board but I'm happy with my micro atx form factor.

lol, I have got and awesome overclock on Asus P5Q Pro + Intel Xeon E5440, im using it now on 3,5Ghz(Default 2,83Ghz), Multipler on 8,5 , Voltage on CPU is on default, Ram Voltage is default as well, FSB:DRAM 1:1 and CPU is with stepping C0. Works with no errors and C1E is disabled!

Your problem could be in RAM, which can be bad for overclocking or in a bad motherboard.Who knows :(

Problem is not ram just the lack of bios options lol
I bought a g41 board with micro ATX form factor that will also take ddr3. DDR3 makes a difference in modern applications with SSDs but didn't make a difference at the time of release.
There are p45 boards(with loads of bios options) which will take ddr3 but I don't think there are any in the micro ATX form factor.
