what would be best for me. Sound card, onboard audio, DAC?

right now im using a cheapo headset that i got along with my prebuild system about 4 years ago and i have them plugged into my new rig in a USB port(microphone/headphone prongs to usb adapter) and was wondering if i will notice an improvement going from this setup, to a sound card or DAC? and would it be worth going from this headset to a newer more quality built headset? so far a few people have complimented by saying that my voice is crystal clear when in skype calls/teamspeak compared to my friends with high dollar headsets but mine picks up EVERY NOISE in the background.

It really depends on how much you want to spend on headphones, if you are going for something in the 100-200$ range with low impedence you wont notice a lot of difference with a dac/sound card.

it would probably be around $40-$60 for the headphones, maybe 80$ at the very very most. so does a dac help with the lower end headsets and not do much with higher end? or would it be worth just getting a $100-130 headset

Yeah getting a 130$ headset is better than a 60$ one and a dac. For best mic quality its better if you buy headhones and a seperate mic. You can go for something like mod mic , but there are also cheaper mics like the Sony ECMCS3.CE7.
