around 4 years ago my laptops hard drive failed (or so i thought) and i stopped using the the laptop. i don't remember exactly what happened, but i tried to do a system restore 10-20 times, but due to the laptop failing, that didn't work. 4 years later i open up the laptop and stick the hard drive into my desktop and it turns out the hard drive is working now. only problem is that the factory restore did work and all of my files are gone. i opened up recover my files v5 and i see pretty much all of my files, but i can't download them because with that software you have to pay something like $70 to download your files. i've tried using recuva but even with the deep scan, it wasn't even able to locate the files for some reason. anyone know of some other data recovery software that's free that might get the job done? for the price of recover my files software, i might aswell take it to a computer shop and have them recover it for me rofl

Hey there, bolshy.

The good news is that if your files are not overwritten, you should be able to recover them (if the HDD doesn't have any issues). Just don't write anything at all on that drive. Here's a thread with a few options, which you could try: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html and if they don't help, you can give a try to some of the suggestions from this article: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm.

I hope you're able to recover your data. Please let me know how it goes.
