Hi,

Reason: I'm looking at upgrading my rig. 1) i'm having issues with my memory/mobo/cpu conflicting when OC'n my memory, mostly due to my cpu bottle necking my ram at 1600 freq. 2) the CPU and Mobo are out-dated. 3) adding a third graphics card which does not fit on my mobo.

Use: I do heavy gaming on dual 1440p monitors (when work allows), mild 3d design, and run two 3d printers off my rig.

Current rig: listed below, the cpu is watercooled. I usually clock the cpu heavily (4.6ish stable) but I leave the cards close to stock speeds.

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 3930K @ 3.20GHz 36 °C
Sandy Bridge-E 32nm Technology
RAM
32.0GB DDR3 @ 799MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. RAMPAGE IV EXTREME (LGA2011) 35 °C
Graphics
ASUS PB278 (2560x1440@59Hz)
ASUS PB278 (2560x1440@59Hz)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI) 31 °C
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI) 31 °C
ForceWare version: 358.91
SLI Enabled
Storage
931GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB (SSD) 32 °C
2794GB Hitachi HDS723030ALA640 (SATA) 33 °C
465GB ASMT 2115 USB Device (SSD) 32 °C
14GB SanDisk SanDisk Ultra USB Device (USB)
Optical Drives
ASUS DRW-24D3ST
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

Now under is what i'm thinking of upgrading, it's not set in stone, mostly seeking advice relating to the CPU / MOBO / MEMORY, future proofing is my concern, I will be adding another GTX 970 (which makes it 3 cards), All advice appreciated.

With your CPU I'd look to the Asus X99 Pro or Deluxe, you don't list the model # of the Fury or data rate, but they tend to run loose CLs, would look at the Ripjaws V or TridentZ - no PSU listed

Also about the only thing you'll see as far as a 50% increase will be in the cost - peformance increase would be more on a scale of maybe an additional 10-15%

The cpu and motherboard are fine, although broadwell arrives around summer and might worth the wait. As for the third card seem to me quite counter productive. I would see if i could change the 970s for 2 980ti's. Again polaris and pascal seem to be around the corner.

Other than that, the choices are fine. Msi makes some solid high end mobos. If you can I would also check that godlike carbon that is coming out.

Thanks CBender, In regards to the 3rd 970, it will scale with over 50% performance increase not sure how you deem that as counter-productive? $230 for 50% increase is a solid trade-off. Changing the 970's to 980 ti's wouldn't be logical from a cost/performance benefit. If i did not already own two 970 cards it would be different.

My main issues are: bad support for sli by gaming companies and 970's lower memory. Even if you get 50% (which i doubt but it is irrelevant) there are games now that need more than 3.5 GB of memory, especially in 4k. So I believe that in a year from now you would again need to upgrade your gpu solution due to memory constraints. That in my book means that you would eventually lose more money, since a year from now the cards would lose a lot of value. If I was in your position i would simply try to cut my loses now. But to each his own I guess :)

Edit: PS: As for direct x 12 and stacking memory we don't actually know what is going to happen.

If you said Crossfire i would agree as i have had numerous issues with it over the last 5-6 years. Although, support has been excellent for my SLI in the last 24 months, although, I don't mind having patience to wait for drivers 2-4 weeks after launch.

I understand 3.5 v ram will be not enough a year from now, but I don't have 3.5, I have 7g of V ram. Adding a 3rd 970 brings that to 10.5? I find that nearly impossible that tech can jump that quickly in 12 months, it has never jumped that much in the last 15 years of pc hardware.

Direct x12 older games will not stack V RAM (Fallout 4 / Witcher 3 / etc) , future games released with / after directx 12 will be stacking V RAM.

The Fury is 2133 freq and i think CLs 14? I have no idea what ram i will eventually get and doubt it has much impact overall.

My recent Tri SLI with the 660 cards gained 40% performance from the THIRD card (on average). No way in hell the third 970 will only gain 10%.

Thanks for all the feedback even though i found some of it misinformation.
