we recently had a server issue in our office so we bought a new server which is working fine but now the problem is the computers do not allow you to log on as it doesn't see the old server. how do we reset this. You can only log on if you take the network cable out. Please help

It sounds like the computers belong to a 'Domain' that was run from the old server. You need to setup a new Domain on the new server.. and remove the PC's from the old domain and add them back one by one. This is not some low level stuff. You will need professional help i'd assume.

When you log into the PC with the network cable out, do you get ANY kind of warning/error message?

I don't think that the PC's are actually domain members (at least, it doesn't sound like it)
Can you right click on 'Computer' (win7) and goto properties.. there it has information about what Workgroup or Domain the pc is a member of..
Just to confirm it'S a workgroup, and not a domain.
Also what do the usernames look like?

Just the username, like: UserXYZ or something like Workstation123\UserXYZ
