“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” and BSOD

Hello!

I have a notebook, with a Radeon HD6370M, which has some problems recently.

When I'm starting any application which uses the dedicated GPU, my screen turns off and on several times, I'm getting an error message: “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” and after this I'm getting Blue screen of death. I've tried the newest (Crimson Edition 16.1 Beta) driver and also with Catalyst Software Suite 15.7.1. With the Crimson Edition 16.1 Beta I'm getting only the error: “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” and no BSOD. When I'm using the notebook for browsing, multimedia it's working fine, I think because it is using only the built-in GPU in those cases.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

It seems like the gpu is ready to bite the dust. The only other thing that comes into mind is that you have recently upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7 or 8 (without making a clean/format installation) and you are facing drivers issues.

You could try to COMPLETELY remove the drivers using a videocard driver cleanup tool (google it!) And then after that process is finished, reinstall the latest available for your particular GPU. This should clear up any issues, assuming the problem is not failing hardware.

@CBender: I've just installed Windows 7 64-bit yesterday, clean installation, the whole HDD was formatted.

I have to mention that this notebook isn't mine. The owner told me that he modified a registry file last week, because a game wasn't starting and he was told to modify a specific registry file. The game has started after he modified the registry, but after that this problem appeared. I have already tried to repair the registry files with CCCleaner, doesn't helped.

So.. it's a clean install, then that registry change will be gone now. Who knows what he changed.. did it over-volt the GPU or something, who knows? Could that have damaged it, well, yes, if he screwed around with voltages.
Bottom line is, with a clean install and properly working hardware, you should not be getting any problems like this.
Are all windows updates installed? .Net 4.x etc.?
I recall having problems with my video drivers once after a new install, because .Net wasn't installed/up to date.
Try installing all available windows updates.. .Net etc. and see if it helps.

If you did a clean installation with no other hardware changes i think that the gpu is preparing for the big journey. Have you checked the insides of the laptop? There could be some physical problems too. Mainly dust, it is the number one laptop killer.

@ktolo: Glad you asked! I have an issue when I'm trying to install windows updates. Error 80072EFE. Windows is checking for updates very long and after that I get this error.

Ah... the mysterious Windows update problem... This had me pulling my hair out!!!
Anyway.. the fix seems to be.. turn on updates... allow them to install automatically.. and wait.. it's probably best to do this overnight or something.
Once it is up to date THEN install your vid-card drivers..
The drivers are probably making calls to .Net or some other system resource that are too far out of date, hence the error.

Looks like Error 80072EFE means a connection prob. Are you using wireless or LAN to get online?

And if you installed a separate firewall, what is it?

I think I came across the same error, last week while checking a PC out with teamviewer.

Eset Internet Security was blocking it. I had to go into its settings to configure it properly

There is a windows hotfix for this issue.. but it doesn't seem to work right away. You install it, still get an error, but eventually, by istelf and as if by magic, it finds updates.. like I said, mysterious!!

Yeah, like i said... eventually, mysteriously it will work!!! I thought it wasn't working either twice! ON the last 2 laptops i re-installed windows, i got this problem. That just fixed itself.. be warned though, it will take a few hours to update.
