Can/Should I Use Current Processor for New Build

Hello!
I've put together a new list for a future upgrade to my computer. Thinking back on it, I was wondering if I really needed a new processor. To my knowledge, the one which was recommended by a friend is only slightly better than my current one (I'll list them bother later) and I don't think my current one is that bad, at least to my knowledge.

TI;DR: Can I take the processor from my current motherboard and put it into my new one, whenever I upgrade?

Current Processor: Intel Core i7 960
Possible Future Processor: Intel Core i5 4460

Negative your 960 uses a different LGA socket type than more recent CPUs from Intel. They change the socket type every other generation more or less.

960 is LGA 1366
4460 is LGA 1150
Skylake is LGA 1151

A new CPU will require a new motherboard of matching LGA type. You can certainly find a new (realistically used due to its age) motherboard for your 960 but it won't net you any performance increase. But no you can't just pop a 4460 into the same motherboard you previously had your 960 installed in.
