I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NW350F laptop computer that was recently given to me. I was told that the hard drive in the laptop was new, and it has windows 8. there didn't seem to be any programs on it, but after installing a few programs (programs i have used in the past), the hard drive says that only 86.5 GB are available of 286. I know none of my programs take up that much space, so how do I figure out and fix what is taking up all the space on my hard drive??

Hi there Danielle_13,

You can do several things:
- Delete temp files.
- Run disk cleanup.
- Reduce the space allocated for System Restore and delete previous restore points.
- Use some disk analyzing tool that will eventually show you what is using up the storage space.

Here's a tutorial on how to do these things: http://www.howtogeek.com/125923/7-ways-to-free-up-hard-disk-space-on-windows/

Hope this will help,

Check your user folder to see if there's user files taking up a lot of space from the previous owner.

Regardless, I suggest doing a clean reinstall of windows 8. Go to this link to create an installation media for 8.1

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

You could also upgrade to windows 10, once 8.1 finishes installing.

I would also download this program real fast as well to pull your windows 8 product key to have handy. Never know what complications you can run into.
