Faulty temperature readings

About 8 years ago i bought this configuration:
MSI 790XT-G45
Athlon 64 x2 5000+ (Stock cooler)
DDR2 RAM 2x1GB
Radeon HD 5670
And about 2 years ago i started having overheating problems so firstly i changed the thermal paste, and cleaned up my pc. and no change. Then i updated every driver i can find including the bios, still no change. The temp. has been constantly raising one degree C every 5 sec even when on idle (My cpu is at stock speed, never overclocked). And it doesn't stop it can go up to 100 C but my pc shuts down at 90. I tried lower or raising the voltage, pretty much everything (including changing the psu) . So i had to lower the multiplier to 5x (the lowest, 1Ghz) for it to stop overheating. A few days ago i changed the thermal paste again (i bought one of the best, arctic silver i think) and i did a stress test and as soon as i click to stress the temp jump by 20 C in a milisecond, same when i stop it it lowered from 80 C to 50 C in a sec. So i touched the cooler when it was at 80 C and it was warmish (i would estimate it at 35 C). So i figure the readings are incorrect, so can i fix it , and is the mobo the problem or the cpu. Thanks :)
PS. Using prime95 for load and the temp readings are from the bios and core temp and speedfan

If this was my computer I would just go out and buy a new Heatsink and Fan. I know you said you checked the Fan and thermal grease but those old stock heatsinks were junk to start with. It will only set you back around $50 just to eliminate the issue and you have to ask your self is it worth it to take the chance on a $50 item making no difference. I would look at it this way, If I get an upgradable heat sink that can work with new sockets, then at the very least I am ready if and when I decide to upgrade my system.

Its most likely the CPU.. if its been having issues like this then it could be something wrong inside the CPU itself.. the Athlon CPUs were not the best. You'd be better off buying a new motherboard and CPU

Have you tried changing the Fan out? Might be burnt up and not spinning fast enough or if it is a PWM Fan it is not getting the pulse signal anymore telling it to ramp up when the CPU is under load.

Also, what temperature software are you using. Some of the software has a problem with AMD chips as the do a distance from TDP reading.

I plan on buying a new pc, but untill i get the funds i have fix this one...The cpu fan is running constantly between 2500-3000 RPM, i've tried literally everything and as i said before I do not think the pc is overheating since the cooler is warm, it feels the same temp on touch when it's supposedly 30 C and 80 C. I already said what's the software i'm using, speedfan and cpu core , from what i've read here they are the best, and the temperature is the same in the bios. Is there some way of fixing this issue without buying a new cpu/mobo? Thanks for the quick reply
