R9 270X Lagging In GTA 5?

Hi, this is my first time using this website. I recently built my first computer with a R9 270X and a I3 4170.

I thought it would be able to play GTA5 on high atleast since this guy is able to do it easily https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJZ1s7rvyvk. But that wasn't the case, I got about 10 fps on the lowest settings.
I haven't overclocked though, nor do I know how. I searched on how to fix this problem but got nothing.
So If anyone could please help me fix this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advanced.

Watched the video. Read the description, it says he is actually running 1600 by 900, the video is 1080p. That would explain how that modest overclock got him 60fps.

Side thought: you said you just built the pc. Well, this may sound dumb, but did you install the gpu drivers? If you didn't, then it's running on the integrated cpu graphics through the gpu. Don't worry if you didn't install them though, just head over to amds website and download the latest version.
This actually happend to me, I was so excited I forgot to download the drivers for my gpu (I thought it would be ok out of the box) loaded up a benchmark and was completely shocked when I got 10fps on low. Got the drivers and sighed with relief to see that sweet, sweet 60fps at...

No doubt your graphics card is being bottlenecked by your processor. If you had a better processor your graphics card will do better. Try doing some major overclocking on your processor and graphics card and see if you can manage 30-45 FPS. Besides that the only noticable thing I can see is that your processor, as I sad is bottlenecking your Graphics card.

Alright, thanks dude. I'm supposed to be getting a new processor in a few months. Should I get a i5 or i7? I'm first gonna try overclocking.

You can't overclock a haswell i3. For the future, only get an i7 is you are doing things that need more cores. For ANY game, if an i5 is the same architecture and speed as an i7, there will be ABSOLUTELY NO noticable difference (yes, some games are starting to use more than four cores, but unless you have seriously unbalanced hardware, it will not be noticeable). Anyway, try turning down the CPU intensive settings (people spawn rate and traffic and the like).

I also remember "patching" fallout 3 because it was being bottlenecked by my cpu (I have the same cpu as you). I read online that you could add a line of code to a text file to enable multiple cores for the AI control and that increased my average fps from 30ish to solid 60. Anyway, have a look online for other people who have tried to play GTA 5 with i3s, maybe there is a similar "patch".

Definitely go with an i7, a 4 core i7 will our perform a 4 core i5. If you want to be safe get something thats a modest i7 like a 4770k that is a very solid processor.

Instead of dropping an extra 120$ on an i7 he does not need, put that cash aside for a better gpu later on. As I said before, the difference IN GAMING between an i5 and i7 is not worth the 120$, you would only see a difference if you had multiple good gpus that where being bottlenecked by the cpu or the game was very well optimized (very, very, VERY few games are, the only example I know of is battlefront, it got like 1-2fps more with an i7 rather than an i5) but you could get a LOT bigger difference if next time you upgrade your gpu, you add on these 120$ you would save (for example, instead of a gtx 950 for 160$ you could get a gtx 970 for 290$, thus giving you about double the performance)

If you do heavy duty video encoding or rendering, then consider the i7, but otherwise it is a WASTE OF MONEY.

It makes no sense to buy an i7 to pair with a 270x. Even with a 980Ti an i5 performs just as well as an i7 when clocked to the same speed for almost every game. As mentioned by computers_are_freaky he would be much better off putting the extra $120 an i7 would cost towards a better GPU.

An i5 4460 would be a great CPU for his system.

Yea I don't do that much heavy stuff on it so I'll get an i5 since it's cheaper and as you said better.

Yeah, it's not BETTER, it just performs the same. But if you mean bang for the buck, then yeah, it's MILES better. If your gpu drivers aren't being activated, try (if you can of course) installing them from the included disk. This ought to get it running, then you can update them from the website. Are you sure you installed the correct driver? This could be the problem. Otherwise, try downloading msi afterburner, if it registers your gpu and lets you monitor it, that means it's installed, no matter what the setting say.

I got the disk from my graphics card and I got the files from another computer and used a usb to transfer it since my computer doesn't have a floppy disk and all I got were these weird files. There is a exe file and when I open it it just opens the msi gaming app which doesn't even register my graphics card.

I downloaded afterburner and it doesn't register my graphics card. Also when I download drivers off of the amd website it downloads it says it sucessfully downloaded and still doesn't register. (I downloaded the latest crimson edition driver)
Thanks for the replies.

have you installed the drivers? go into downloads and run the crimson files. I'm afraid this is the only reason I can think of for afterburner to not register your card. If you have already installed drivers, then I reccomend having a look around google and seeing if anyone else has had the same problem and how they fixed it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, and good luck
