The G Skill NT series has 2400mhz DDR4 RAM for less than 50 pound. I don't think there's anything to gain performance wise from more expensive RAM. The G.Skill NT series wll work with my gaming rig that includes the i7 6700k, Maximus Hero Viii, and Samsung 950 Pro so I'm happy. Question is, do I really need a metal heat spreader or is this kind of RAM fine for a 'high end' rig? Are the heat spreaders simply for show at significantly more cost?

Solution
The heatsinks do indeed dissipate heat, though heat is seldom an issue (with DDR3 the sticks can get warmer than you migght want when running voltages of 1.6 and higher, with DDR4 look for sinks for voltages of 1.3 and up

No, the heatspreaders are kind of a requirement if you're running your RAM at very high speed, it generates alot of heat and generally you want to keep your RAM cool, besides, the heatspreaders make your RAM look gorgeous

Heat spreaders are questionable in their usefulness. They just look good though don't they!? The RAM will work as it is designed out of the box with or without heat spreaders. If you are overclocking your RAM then they may arguably provide a benefit with a little more heat dissipation.

That memory runs on 1.2 volts and no you do not need heat spreaders.
More or less every since the release of DDR3 their really just for looks unless your overclocking kicking up the volts.
The memory you have is just fine like it is don't let somebody talk you into spending more money.
