Hey everyone,

last night, after almost 5 years, my 7950 released it's soul. Now I'm looking for a replacement GPU that won't be bottlenecked (gaming) by my CPU, since I'm stuck with FX6100@4.0GHz. Keep in mind that I'm a fan of ati cards. :)

My build:
Sabertooth 990fx v1
8gb ddr3 mushkin
Ssd 120gb mushkin
Hdd 1tb wd blue
Fx 6100 4.0ghz

Well depends what you mean by stuck with the FX-6100. That Sabertooth 990FX is a lovely board and has wide compatibility for a CPU upgrade. But if you mean you don't want to spend money on it then I totally understand. In which case I think that you are probably best looking at a R9-380x if you have a 1080p monitor @ 60hz. You may loose a few FPS from the fairly poor single threaded performance of that CPU but I think the system should be ample to maintain 60fps in pretty much any game with high / ultra settings. Might just need to take some time to tweak settings a little to get the sweet spot.

I just need the best card that wont be bottlenecked by fx6100@4.0GHz, I can't see how budget has an effect on that, I'm willing to spend around 200€, give or take 100... Not really solid range.

Well I guess as a frame of reference, I have a GTX 770 and an Athlon 860k. I'm pretty confident a faster card would not benefit my system. I used to have an i7-2600 with this card and I've benchmarked the bejesus out of it and the Athlon looses on average 3-6fps across benchmarks. So I think I've hit my performance ceiling. If you look at Toms GPU chart then you probably want to be looking in the same section as the GTX 770.

As you can see your 7950 was one tier below this, in fairness that probably matches the single thread performance of your 6100. But I think having a bit of extra headroom definitely wouldn't hurt.

Fair enough, it's unusual as most people have a definite maximum amount they can spend. No point suggesting a $200 card if you only have $100 to spend, for example.

So your card is still being sold, if you're happy with it and wanted the exact same card again AMD now call it the Radeon R9 280.

The 280X would be a small upgrade on your current card, it's a rebadged 7970.

If you wanted to go for a newer model of card then the 290 would be the one to go for and would be a significant upgrade on your current card.
