Added a 250gb ssd, better psu, personally a better gpu, downgraded the i5 6600k to a 4760k which is really still a good cpu, along with a better motherboard, and much better case as well.

SSDs are just a lot faster than normal hard drives. So your boot time will be faster, anything installed on the SSD will load faster, and they can help your system feel more responsive overall. They're a lot more expensive than HDDs in terms of $/GB, so it's common to get a relatively small SSD (128 or 256 GB) and a larger HDD.

Btw, My last gaming rig had a mid tower and it worked perfectly, is it necessary to have a full tower? (Im going to be doing casual gaming)

Well people game with mini itx's so no it won't and yes it could. It's entirely dependent on your setup. How you exhaust hot air, if it's a smaller rig you'd be much more inclined to remove heat via water cooling it takes a lot of guessing out of the equation if you can direct exhaust easier.

Just make sure you have some air flow fans inside the case blowing air away from the cpu/gpu and towards fans exhausting out of the case. As well as a fan or two blowing air into the case and you should be fine.
